StadiumTM and Coventry University worked together in December to deliver a world class simulation in Stadium Safety.  Those receiving the training were sixteen Qatari Police Officials who are involved in the Safety and Security of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The simulation taking place over three hours in Coventry University’s unique Simulation Centre building. The facility boasts the best people development and interactive training facilities and capabilities in the UK. The course was designed and delivered by StadiumTM’s Training Company, the company delivering the niche NVQ Spectator Safety qualifications to their staff and to external organisations.

The simulation consisted of various Stadium Safety scenarios and allowed the group to be put through their paces. Such scenarios including:

  • A lost child
  • Intoxicated fans with no tickets.
  • Crushing at a turnstile
  • A kiosk fire
  • An outer stadium footprint road traffic accident leading to the delay of the players’ coach and walking injured persons arriving at the Stadium requiring First Aid attention.

Lorraine Baillie, the mastermind behind designing the course, who herself holds a Level 4 Diploma in Spectator Safety Management; “This is an exciting period of growth for the company and places Coventry on the map for specialist Stadium Safety Training. To use such facilities like Coventry University’s Simulation Centre and to be able to deliver an international standard course in part of the lead up to the 2022 World Cup is something we are extremely proud of. The impact this has on StadiumTM is significant and strengthening relationships with local establishments has been fantastic. The experience has shown the scope to which we can work and deliver.”

The UK is known globally for the Premier League and having world renowned stadiums, these being a few additional reasons the Coventry based company were selected to provide the specialist training. The current football clubs working with StadiumTM on their event services are: Liverpool FC, Burnley FC, Aston Villa FC, Stoke City, Derby County, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burton Albion.

Emma Parkinson, a senior lecturer in Emergency Planning & Management was integral in the process, “The skills and facilities of Coventry University and Stadium TM combined effectively to deliver an international-standard product. Stadium TM’s in-depth knowledge of their sector and client – as well as their client’s very specific needs – was coupled with the University’s expertise in training and exercising and the management of crowded places.  Using this background we were able to work together to design a stadium simulation which put the candidates through their paces in a realistic and immersive environment. Candidates were able to understand their own strengths and weaknesses, giving context to their training requirements – we hope this will be a significant contribution towards the safety and security of the 2022 World Cup. At Coventry University we run similar exercises for professionals who are also students on our MSc programmes in Emergency Management & Resilience, Disaster Management & Resilience and Crowded Places & Public Safety Management – it’s an invaluable experience.”
